Lotus of Siam and Naxos Taverna are leaving Red Rock Resort Las Vegas in Summerlin, and The Oyster Bar will reopen on Oct. 30, according to an announcement on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Station Casinos said, “The entities that operate Lotus of Siam, Naxos Taverna and The Red Rock Oyster Bar outlets have agreed that their tenancies will end effective Oct. 29.”
“Station Casinos will resume operations of The Red Rock Oyster Bar on Oct. 30 and will continue to offer its signature recipes and dishes that have made it a city-wide favorite. Plans for the other two restaurants will be announced in the coming weeks,” the announcement said.
Lotus of Siam is regarded as the best Thai restaurant in the U.S., but the Red Rock location has been under a cloud since a lawsuit two years ago that laid bare a conflict involving the alteration of recipes. Lotus of Siam’s founders were in a trademark dispute with The Bua Group, which opened new locations for the popular restaurant, including the restaurant at Red Rock.
It’s unclear if the court dispute is related to the Red Rock location’s closure. A total of 81 workers will be affected by Lotus of Siam’s closure at Red Rock, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
The original restaurant in Commercial Center on East Sahara Avenue was wildly popular, attracting customers who arrived in limousines from Las Vegas resorts. Lotus of Siam won a James Beard Award (for Chef and Owner Saipin Chutimas, pictured in the main photo) and “global acclaim,” according to the lawsuit. ‘Lotus of Siam has been voted ‘Best Thai food in all of the United States’ by Gourmet Magazine and heralded by Travel Magazine for its unique Northern Thailand cuisine,” the lawsuit said.
The Commercial Center location reopened in May. The Oyster Bar has grown along with Station Casinos, attracting a devoted following in Las Vegas for seafood dishes. A layoff notice filed by Parlay Projects indicates 67 people are employed at Kallisto Oyster Bar and Naxos Taverna. Station Casinos emphasized that the Oyster Bar is not closing.
