Fontainebleau Las Vegas on the Las Vegas Strip is welcoming legendary Hong Kong Cantopop trio Grasshopper for two shows Nov. 27-28 at BleauLive Theater. Formed in Hong Kong in 1985, Grasshopper began when childhood friends and neighbors Edmond So, Calvin Choy and Remus Choy entered the city’s New Talent Singing Awards together.
A power outage backstage during their audition led to a conversation with Anita Mui, the Cantopop superstar who was impressed enough to invite the trio to join her as backup dancers and singers.
That apprenticeship shaped their sound and stagecraft: Grasshopper signed with PolyGram Records and released their debut album in February 1988. The trio’s mix of high-energy choreography and playful, hook-driven pop set them apart in a Cantopop scene long dominated by ballads.
Hits including “Material Girl” and “La La Means I Love You” helped make Grasshopper one of Hong Kong’s most successful pop groups through the late 1980s and 1990s. The band reunited in 2005 and have been selling out arenas and theaters across Hong Kong, mainland China and Southeast Asia.
Now celebrating more than 40 years together, Grasshopper has carried that momentum onto its world tour. Grasshopper at BleauLive Theater at Fontainebleau Las Vegas will feature refreshed musical arrangements and new stage production complementing the group’s timeless lyrics and signature choreography.
