Ada’s Wine Bar is excited to host a special wine & cheese pairing with Guest Sommelier Jodie Hellman, and Cheesemonger Diana Brier as part of its continuing Somm Sundays series.
Hellman is a former manager at Ada’s Wine Bar, so serving as a guest somm is a bit of a “homecoming” for her, while this is the first Somm Sunday also featuring a guest cheesemonger in Brier. This dynamic duo will ‘takeover’ Ada’s Wine Bar on October 3 from 3 -7 p.m.
Hellman hand-selected five wines featuring classic styles and old-world regions with new discoveries and unique blends from superb winemakers in the USA. These unique wines have been expertly paired with five cheeses hand-selected by Brier. Highlights of the pairings include:
- 2015 Nerello Mascalese, Tornatore ‘Trimarchisa’, Etna Rosso from Sicily, Italy, paired with Honey Bee Gouda, featuring Netherlands goat’s milk
- 2019 Orin Swift ‘8 Years in the Desert,’ from California paired with Point Reyes Bay Blue, California goat’s milk.
The wines can be purchased by the glass or as a flight, and all come with their corresponding cheese pairing. Bottles are also available to take home. During the tasting, Hellman and Brier will provide guests with the background, tasting notes and characteristics of each wine.
Reservations via the website adaslv.com are strongly recommended, but walk-ins will also be welcome per availability. The regular menu & wine list will also be available.
Hellman is a Certified Sommelier – Level 2 through CMS, as well as a sake specialist, and is currently serving as a sales consultant for Johnson Brothers Distribution. She has worked for some of the most well-known chefs in the world including Wolfgang Puck, Daniel Boulud, Tom Collichio and Bobby Flay as a Sommelier. Fascinated by all aspects of the wine industry, Jodie went to Burgundy to work harvest and returned to learn about distribution, working for a family winery and then importing. She is currently working with VIA Academy in Verona, Italy to become an Italian Wine Ambassador.
Brier is a Certified Cheese Professional and Certified Cheese Sensory Evaluator with the American Cheese Society. She is one of the few cheese professionals in Las Vegas, and is the owner of Valley Cheese and Wine in Henderson, NV. Diana has worked in every aspect of the cheese industry including farming, milk receiving, pasteurization, cheesemaking, affinage, wholesale and distribution, consultation, and mongering. Diana started working with cheese at Whole Foods Market and Harmons Grocery. She honed her cheesemaking skills working as a Cheesemaker at Deer Valley Resort, and Production Supervisor at Rogue Creamery, and Cheese Consultant at MGP Food. In July of 2020, her entrepreneurial spirit took hold and she bought Vegas’s oldest cheese shop, Valley Cheese & Wine, in July of 2020.
