Families battling against childhood cancer got a once-in-a-lifetime surprise earlier this week when First Lady Dr. Jill Biden joined a virtual family trivia night hosted by Tyler Robinson Foundation (TRF) and The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation.
TRF and the Jay Fund share the same focus of providing financial and emotional support services to families battling pediatric cancer. The virtual trivia night is just one example of each foundation’s work to create special opportunities and keep families connected during a challenging time of crisis. Dr. Biden was joined by members of the GRAMMY Award-winning band Imagine Dragons along with 2X Super Bowl winning head coach Tom Coughlin. The virtual trivia night was emceed by top open format DJ, DJ Ross One. Approximately 40 patients and their families from across the country joined the night’s festivities.
This is not the first time Dr. Biden, Imagine Dragons and Coach Coughlin have come together in support of the pediatric cancer community. In 2018, the group teamed up to deliver a powerful public service announcement in support of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Each year, approximately 15,000 people under the age of 20 are diagnosed with some form of cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – that’s 43 children diagnosed with cancer each day. Cancer does not discriminate. Its impact has been felt in every community across the U.S. leaving a devastating emotional and financial toll on the families tackling the disease.
Dr. Biden, along with the founders of the Jay Fund and TRF, have each been touched by cancer’s devastation, having walked the journey with a child, a loved one, teammate, fan or friend. In coming together at this week’s virtual trivia night, the groups hope to offer these families their support. No one fights childhood cancer alone. It takes a team. The Jay Fund has touched more than 5,000 families through their cancer journeys providing more than $15 million in financial assistance to families in northeast Florida and the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. TRF is the nonprofit organization of the GRAMMY Award-winning band Imagine Dragons. Since its inception eight years ago, TRF has raised in excess of $10 million to support more than 1,500 families around the globe battling childhood cancer by providing grants to offset the many unseen costs associated with treatment.
