Sam & Ash Injury Law is sponsoring the West Career and Technical Academy Mock Trial Team trip to the national tournament through a collective $10,000 sponsorship. This is the team’s fourth year competing and first invitation to the national tournament which will take place in Wilmington, Delaware, from May 2nd-5th, 2024.
“We are honored to support the West Career and Technical Academy Mock Trial Team as they head to nationals to represent Nevada. Ash and I admire their dedication and commitment to the law industry, and appreciated the opportunity to give back to the community by supporting this talented team,” says Sam Mirejovsky, Partner at Sam & Ash Injury Law.
Originating with a group of students in its inaugural year back in 2020, the team embarked on their journey without the guidance of lawyers. However, in the program’s second year, the school sought assistance from the Nevada State Bar, leading to the invaluable mentorship of Ben Nemec from the Federal Defender’s office. Nemec then enlisted the support of Michael Coggeshall from Gillock & Coggeshall and Sarada Toomey, a former Mock Trial Coach, to join as coaches.
“It’s truly remarkable to witness the evolution of this relatively new program at West Tech, says Nemec. “Our team was coached only by defenders, not prosecutors. The road ahead at nationals promises stiff competition, but we have the utmost confidence in the West Tech Team’s abilities. Unlike the regional and state tournaments, where we had five months to prepare with the same case, we now face the challenge of readying ourselves in just about one month.”
The West Tech Team will be competing alongside 47 other teams, including an international team from South Korea and teams from various United States territories. Two law firms, Sam & Ash Injury Law and Gillock & Coggeshall, have each donated $5,000 to support The West Tech Team’s trip.
Additionally, the State Bar of Nevada is contributing $3,000. In addition to the sponsorships provided, the Mayor’s office plans to honor the West Tech Mock Trial teams alongside West Tech’s “We the People” team on April 10.
The We The People team, led by Mr. Ryan Handlon earned a wildcard for the national competition in Washington DC, making this only the third team in twenty-three years to be invited from Southern Nevada to compete at nationals. The Mayor’s office will also celebrate the school’s achievement in Magnet school excellence, with Principal Ms. Rozar nominated for National Magnet School Principal of the Year.
