Hospital joins with local non-profit works to end period poverty, Which explains ‘period supplies are school supplies.’
Project Marilyn, a local nonprofit whose mission is to stop period poverty in Southern Nevada, announced today that Southern Hills Hospital & Medical Center will be sponsoring Project Marilyn’s efforts to raise funds and collect enough product to “Pad the Bus” at Communities In Schools (CIS)’ annual Fill The Bus school supply drive on July 27.
Collection boxes will be available at three locations, and the hospital will match all product donations up to 20,000 pads. Project Marilyn will deliver the collected supplies to the Fill The bus event in their branded, pink “Maxi-Taxi.”
“We are thrilled to partner with Southern Hills in supporting Communities In Schools and Clark County School District. Nationally, one in four teens miss school when they don’t have access to period supplies,” said Project Marilyn founder, Wendi Schweigart. “Many can have their period for the first time and attempt to use substitute products which are unhealthy and dangerous.”
“Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center’s mission is the care and improvement of human life,” Southern Hills Hospital CEO Alexis Mussi said. “Too many students in our community do not have access to safe and needed supplies. That’s why we are proud to support Project Marilyn in their efforts to end period poverty in Southern Nevada.”
69% of female public school students attend Title 1 schools, yet federal programs like SNAP and EBT cannot be used to purchase period supplies, classifying them as “luxury items.” That means the need must be filled by either schools or other services, which may not have the funding necessary to provide supplies. This makes the need more urgent than ever. “As long as a teen is in school, we must recognize that period supplies ARE school supplies. We believe everyone, no matter their age deserves a healthy and dignified period – PERIOD,” Schweigart said.
Southern Hills will be collecting supplies at the following locations:
Southern Hills Hospital & Medical Center- 9300 W Sunset Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89148
ER at the Lakes- 3325 S. Ft. Apache Las Vegas, NV 89117
ER at S. Las Vegas Blvd- 10770 S Las Vegas Blvd Las Vegas, NV 89183

ABOUT PROJECT MARILYN
The mission of Project Marilyn is to ensure everyone has a healthy and dignified period. PERIOD. Project Marilyn assembles period kits and distributes them to other nonprofits.
Period supplies are often overlooked so Project Marilyn is working to fill that void. Project Marilyn officially became a 501(c)3 in April of 2019. The nonprofit organization is named after and dedicated to Wendi’s mom, Marilyn.
The logo is her photo and her actual signature from her driver’s license that Wendi kept after she passed away in 2011 from breast cancer. “We miss my mom so much each day, to do this in her memory makes us feel like she’s still with us.”
