4th Annual Happy Hippie Harvest Run at the non-profit Gilcrease Orchard on Saturday, November 5th. Folks run/walk a 5K, 10K or 1/2 marathon.
Heavily themed run supporting Gilcrease Orchard and the local blind runner community. Approximately 12 blind runners and their guides will participate.
About Happy Hippie Harvest Run
The race was created as a way to raise money and awareness in a creative and fun way for the 90+ year-old non-profit Gilcrease Orchard.
The majority of runners dress in hippie attire as they run/walk past apples, pears, peaches, cucumbers, squash, eggplant and the famous Gilcrease pumpkins.
To amplify the festive environment, there’s live entertainment at the start/finish line.
History of Blind Runners Competing at the Happy Hippie
Beyond Limits Running, the owners of the hippie run, started recruiting blind runners to their nationally-recognized Jackpot Ultra Running Festival four years ago.
In 2019, they had two blind runners, along with their running guides, compete in Jackpot. In an effort to recruit more running guides and educate the blind community that there are resources to enjoy the sport of running, the owner’s family foundation made a $20,000 donation earlier this year to Achilles International, a national organization that promotes running guides for blind runners and other adaptive athletes.
Thanks to a fantastic group of local volunteers, awareness is quickly spreading. At least 12 blind runners, along with their running guides, will run/walk at this year’s Hippie Run.
The entire race takes place in the vehicular-free Orchard; the perfect venue for blind runners to run/walk safely.
