The Center is awarding the Petzing Perseverance Scholarship to three promising students who plan careers in the LGBTQIA+ community by providing culturally sensitive health and human services.
The scholarship is named for volunteer Jim Petzing, who upped the scholarship amount to $5000 when impressed by the work of the finalists, all Center volunteers.
The recipients of the Petzing Perseverance Scholarship are:
Willy Jay Nicolas, who volunteers as a testing counselor. He is awarded $3000 and plans to use the scholarship to pay for medical school applications and MCAT test fees.
Kandall Dietz, who volunteers at the reception desk and is a CAN advocate, is awarded $1000. Recently accepted into the UNLV social work master’s MA program, she will use the scholarship for educational expenses.
Izzy Fernandez, who volunteers as a testing counselor in the clinic reception, is awarded $1,000.The scholarship will help bridge the gap for her final undergraduate semester and upon graduation, she will apply to medical school.
Petzing plans to continue this scholarship next year and hopes to increase the scholarship amount. “The Center is writing both literal and figurative checks to people who plan to make an impact on the LGBTQIA+ community by continuing their education and going on to careers in healthcare,” says Nicol McNee, volunteer and senior programs manager at The Center.
