September is National Family Meals Month, and Smith’s Food and Drug Stores are using their annual Make A Difference Day on September 29 to raise awareness of the benefits of frequent family meals, in addition to helping provide meals to families facing food insecurity.
Smith’s store associates in 142 stores will engage with customers to explain the importance of enjoying meals at home and request they make a pledge to share one more meal at home per week by signing a commitment card. Customers will also be invited to make a $5.00 donation to the Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation to help end hunger in communities Smith’s call home.
As part of Make A Difference Day, Smith’s employees will volunteer 500 hours of time to pack “Dinner in a Bag” meal kits for families in need in their local community. Smith’s will donate over 7,000 meals kits to local food banks and food pantries.
In 2017, Smith’s parent company Kroger, announced their Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative to end hunger in our communities and eliminate waste across our company by 2025. Smith’s celebrates this milestone each year by participating in an annual Make a Difference Day where associates have the opportunity to donate their time to help solve hunger in their community.
“Studies have shown extensive nutrition, social, and mental benefits are associated with family meals,” said Aubriana Martindale, Smith’s corporate affairs manager. “That’s why Smith’s is encouraging our customers to enjoy one more meal together per week and join us in our efforts to ensure all families have access to fresh food.”
