The 4th of July is a time for gatherings and celebrations. Unfortunately, it’s also a time when accidents occur.
Each year, thousands of people are injured in fireworks-related incidents. Some even lose their lives, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
One local community management expert, Mary Rendina, of CAMCO (Complete Association Management Company), has some tips to help keep your household and community safe.
Important tips include:
- Maintain a safe landing space for fireworks, and be aware of people around you at all times
- Do not dispose of spent shells in combustible containers like plastic garbage pails; soak any duds in water
- Use caution if allowing children to use sparklers, give them your undivided attention
- Use a BBQ utility butane lighter and purchase fireworks from reputable vendors
- Make sure the adult in charge of the fireworks is sober
- Pay attention to wind strength and direction
- Avoid lighting firecrackers in your hands to throw them
- Be courteous to others. If hosting a party, talk to your neighbors first.
- Keep pets and the elderly in mind. They may be startled by loud noises.
