Gov. Sisolak Congratulates Winner of Travel Nevada Kids’ Flag Contest

Gov. Sisolak Met Virtually With Las Vegas-Area Fourth-Grader Elijah Rivero and His Classmates Tuesday Afternoon to Congratulate Him on Winning the Discover Your Nevada Kids Flag Contest.

The online competition, organized by the Nevada Division of Tourism (Travel Nevada), provided an opportunity for students to express what they know about the state in a pictorial format. Elijah’s winning design includes a desert bighorn sheep, the Nevada state animal, standing on red/orange landscape next to a blue panel that includes the words “Battle Born,” a reference to the fact that Nevada joined the Union in 1864, during the Civil War.

Elijah and his classmates at Coral Academy of Science in Las Vegas, along with teacher Alison Trafton and others, were able to talk with Gov. Sisolak in a virtual conference call on Tuesday. Students asked the governor about various issues, including whether or not he likes hamburgers and if his job is hard.

Discover Your Nevada Kids is the student component of Discover Your Nevada, a Travel Nevada campaign encouraging Nevadans to travel within the state. Launched in fall 2020, the DiscoverNVKids.org website provides Nevada facts and history. The flag contest, which ran in late 2020, was designed for students in the fourth grade, the year in which the state’s social studies curriculum covers Nevada history.
