Southwest University of Naprapathic Medicine’s co-founder to join Gov. Joe Lombardo for historic bill signing at Sawyer Building
Dr. Patrick Nuzzo, Southwest University of Naprapathic Medicine’s co-founder and president, will attend the July 17 signing of Assembly Bill 153, which will establish an advisory board to oversee licensing of naprapathic medicine practitioners in Nevada.
Nuzzo will attend the noon bill signing at the Sawyer Building, 555 E. Washington Ave., joining state Assemblywoman Elaine Marzola and Gov. Joe Lombardo, who will sign the measure.
Naprapathic medicine is a drug-free method of treating pain in the connective tissue that supports the spinal column and bodily joints. The practice uses manual medicine, noninvasive modalities, therapeutic and rehabilitative exercise and nutritional counseling.
According to A.B. 153, the law will establish the Naprapathic Practice Advisory Board; provide for naprapathy regulation by the state Board of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Public and Behavioral Health Division; prescribe requirements for naprapathy license issuance and renewal; and prescribe requirements governing naprapathy practice.
In a statement, Nuzzo and the university, which is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and plans a Nevada campus, called the bill’s passage and signing momentous. Expanding to Nevada, Nuzzo said, will let the Distance Education Accrediting Commission-accredited university deliver top-flight naprapathic education and transform statewide health care.
“We firmly believe that this breakthrough will open up new avenues for effective and drug-free treatments, providing relief and improved well-being to those suffering from pain and musculoskeletal conditions,” Nuzzo said.
Nuzzo’s healthcare career started in 1974, when he became a functional nutritionist. He’d eventually formulate nutritional supplements for global brands such as Kraft General Foods and Anheuser-Busch. Nuzzo later entered naprapathy, following in the footsteps of his uncle and fellow naprapath Dr. Joseph Mamana, who studied with naprapathic medicine founder Oakley Smith.
Nuzzo established and managed naprapathic practices in California, Illinois and New Mexico. His clients included Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton, a Pro Football Hall-of-Famer.
Nuzzo has worked continually to advance naprapathy, pushing for the passage of the Naprapathic Practice Act in New Mexico and A.B. 153 in Nevada
