Chef Ismaele received first place in the International Italian Sandwich Championship last week
Italian sandwich delights from the mind of Chef Ismaele Romano are making their way to Ellis Island Hotel, Casino & Brewery next month. The Sicilian chef participated in the 2021 International Pizza Expo’s International Italian Sandwich Championship and won the World Sandwich Champion on Thursday, August 19. His creation of a porchetta and eggplant sandwich served on kale and dandelion-infused focaccia took first place. 
The award-winning sandwich is just one item on the menu at Via Focaccia, the soon-to-open fast-casual artisan sandwich shop Chef Ismaele brings to the casino floor at Ellis Island in September. Via Focaccia will boast delicious homemade Sicilian favorites – straight from Chef Ismaele’s mealtime memories in Italy as a young boy. The menu will focus on fresh, Italian ingredients and traditional preparations.
“We are so proud of Chef Ismaele for taking home this award,” said Director of Marketing Christina Ellis. “Our team is looking forward to bringing his creations to Ellis Island next month.”
