Judges Selected 30 Winning Stories from Nearly 700 Entries
Vegas PBS is proud to announce and congratulate the winners of the 2021 VEGAS PBS KIDS Writers Contest Presented by Janice Allen.
From a pool of nearly 700 entries, a panel of authors, educational staff and community members selected 18 stories based upon originality, creative expression and several other criteria. Three top winners were selected from each grade level. Each winning writer received a prize pack including a trophy and a bound copy of their story delivered to their home, along with having a digital copy uploaded to the Vegas PBS website.
The VEGAS PBS KIDS Writers Contest is designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, active learning. The contest — made possible by local financial support from Janice Allen — empowers children in grades K-5 to celebrate creativity and build literacy skills by writing and illustrating their very own stories.
“Despite the less-than-ideal circumstances, our team has done an incredible job to ensure we’re still able to organize this yearly contest,” said Dr. Niki Bates, Vegas PBS Educational Media Services Director. “When children are empowered to use their imaginations, they’re not only having fun but also learning.”
In lieu of the traditional in-person ceremony, Vegas PBS is producing a broadcast special that will air in September 2021 on channel 10.1.
