Students to operate farmers market booths to support school’s hydroponic gardens created through the Home-Grown Henderson program
Students from Robert Taylor, Fay Galloway, J. Marlan Walker and McCaw STEAM Academy elementary schools will sell vegetables grown from their hydroponic gardens during the City of Henderson Farmers Market on Thursday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Downtown Recreation Center.
Students at these schools are not only learning how to care for hydroponic gardens but also learning how to sell their produce at student-operated farmers market booths with the help of teachers.
All money earned from selling student-grown produce at the Henderson Farmers Market will help fund and maintain the school gardens.
The following are assortments of student-grown produce available for purchase:
- Vegetables
- Fruit
- Herbs
The hydroponic gardens were made possible through Home Grown Henderson, a City of Henderson program responsible for securing Nevada’s only Farm-to-School 2021 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service.
The grant helps fund and create hydroponic gardening systems for elementary students to participate in hands-on physical science learning, demonstrations and student-operated farmer’s markets in coordination with the local nonprofit Green Our Planet.
