Spring break travel could leave any homeowner vulnerable to a burglary.
Las Vegas-based owner of Boss Security Screens, James Kerr, says there are plenty of simple practices to help homeowners keep their homes safe while they’re away this time of year.
Kerr founded his company as a solution for a home security concern of his own: keeping his family safe while he traveled for business. Family safety and security have always been a passion for him.
Some of his spring break safety tips include:
- Make neighbors part of your security team: It may require a little legwork, but getting to know your neighbors, sharing information with them, and being the eyes and ears for one another when someone is out of town is a great way to keep your home secure. Neighborhood watches are great for crime prevention, Kerr says.
- Tidiness pays off: Keep your landscaping cleaned up, take down old door flyers, and pick up mail packages. It all goes a long way in making your home look occupied and busy.
- Secure windows and doors: Surprisingly many burglaries occur because people leave a door or window unlocked, Kerr adds. Make a practice of scanning your home before you leave and make sure all access points areas are locked.
- Light up the exterior: Thieves are like cockroaches, Kerr explains, they do their work in the dark. So, install lights around the exterior of your house to assure people can be seen all around it, and there are no dark areas where thieves can hide.
- Use cameras for information gathering: Cameras won’t always deter a burglar, but they are a valuable way to learn who is coming and going, Kerr also says.
The security expert emphasizes the importance of enjoying your time away, too. “While security is important, let these tips help you enjoy your trip. You don’t want to be in a constant state of fear when it comes to the subject of security,” he adds.
