Why do I love Jeff McBride’s magic?
I will admit it, I am not a magician. My husband is the magician in the family. But I love to watch Jeff McBride’s magic performances and I love watching his educational videos.
I was first exposed to Jeff McBride’s magic by watching his 3 volume DVD series called Magic At the Edge.
I loved it. There were four different types of “lessons/presentations” in the DVDs:
- Showing the magic being done as a performance.
- Talking about how to do the different magic tricks
- Talking about being a performer
- Talking about how he got started as a magician and a street performer and how he gets inspiration.
He intermingles the 4 items, so it is not all of the magic shows, and then talks and teaches. It is like 10 minutes of a magic show, and then 10 minutes of teaching, etc., etc., etc.
I not only enjoyed him as a magician, but I enjoyed him as a teacher. He is an inspiration not only to future magicians but to anyone who is interested in how to interact with an audience or creativity in general. He talks about when he was just starting out how he would watch the Mime performers that never spoke, and how that had a huge inspiration on Jeff’s magic style. Using facial expressions. Using body movements. The magic. It is all part of the story, and the experience the audience has in watching the show.
I remember in one lesson he talked about always having his “magic notebook” by his bedside, because a lot of times when you first wake up and you are in that in-between state of sleep and awake … and you can still remember your dreams, but you soon forget them as you fully wake up. The point of the notebook being by the bedside is to be able to jot down these memories or ideas before you forget them.
But he does not just use any old notebook you buy in the store. He decorates it to make it personal. He showed his own personal notebook and how he made it look magical. It can be as simple or as complex as you want it.
Jeff inspired me to make sure that my children always had a good hard-cover notebook where they could draw or write what they want. My kids never got around to seriously decorating the outside of the notebooks, but they did use them. And my oldest son, who loves to draw as a relaxing activity, loves to still browse through his notebook and see how his drawings have changed over the years, both in terms of quality and the topics.
If you are serious about wanting to decorate the outside of your notebook (or even create a whole book from scratch, including the paper), I would recommend watching the YouTube channel Nerdforge, Book Binding.
Wonderground, McBride’s Las Vegas Show online
The WONDERGROUND was created as a place to bring the community of magic and variety together for an extraordinary experience in co-created art and play. The third Thursday of every month artists, magicians, variety performers, dancers, painters, musicians, multi-media artists, and poets come together to celebrate and create an experience.
McBride’s Theatrical and Casino Showroom
Jeff McBride has been performing in Casino showrooms for over 30 years. He has been a professional magician for over 40 years.
“Shows range from the extremely intimate and powerful Magic Behind the Mask, in which McBride takes the audience along on his own personal journey of discovery, on up to the full-evening illusion spectacle of Abracadazzle, with 3-5 assistants, full production numbers and large illusions.”
Side note: Jeff McBride’s street magic performances are still my favorite, but all of his shows are worth seeing. If you can get to Las Vegas, definitely check out his shows. And if you cannot, at least watch them online (although, I will warn you, once you watch a Jeff McBride performance online, you are going to be adding “watch Jeff McBride in person in Las Vegas” to your “lifetime bucket list”.
McBride’s most popular theatrical show is currently Magic at the Edge, in which he is joined by two assistants.
All of McBride’s shows are custom-tailored to fit the anticipated audiences and venues – shows in China are different from those in the US – those in casino showrooms have a quite different pace and theme than those in theaters or at arts festivals.
McBride’s Corporate Events and Fund Raising Galas
McBride understands just the right way to serve different events. He knows how to provide an amazing and appropriate set-up for each interstitial bit so that all the parts flow together, how to ensure the event will come together as a whole. Every event has different needs, and McBride is the master facilitator who can supply entertaining elements to make your event the memorable and meaningful experience you want.
Combining the talents of a brilliant performer, an engaging master of ceremonies, and a knowledgeable keynote speaker, he mixes a perfect blend to bring all the parts of your event together into a memorable and cohesive whole. Pairing original illusions, inspiring stories and acting skills to his troubleshooting qualities behind the scenes, McBride provides an almost magical frame for your event that will keep it flowing and make everyone shine.
Summary
If I was a business person (owner or manager) who had to interact with customers or public speaking to groups, I would definitely invest in Jeff McBride’s classes. He knows how to interact with an audience, and how to inspire creativity, and those are two skills that any successful business owner or manager needs to have.
Should you turn your business meetings in a “show” or a “game”? No, of course not. But adding a little bit of “magic”, and interacting with your audience instead of just “talking to them” can go a long way between your meeting being a success (accomplishing what the meeting is intended to accomplish) or being a bust (with your audience falling asleep or thinking about when is this going to end).
So go to Las Vegas and check out Jeff McBride’s Magic & Mystery School.
