Before we get into the nitty gritty of bingo in Las Vegas today, let’s take a look at the history of this beloved game, moving on then to look at how it got to Sin City and flourished into one of the top attractions in Las Vegas today!

So, without further ado, let’s consider the top spots to play bingo in Las Vegas with a look first at the history of bingo more generally as a game in its own right.

The history of bingo

Scholars are divided on the origins of bingo, but most agree that the game dates back to at least the 16th century. One theory suggests that bingo was based on an Italian lottery game called “lo giuoco del lotto d’Italia,” which was first played in 1530. Another theory claims that bingo originated in France in the early 1700s.

The French version of the game was known as “Le Lotto” and was played by aristocrats who would mark numbers on cards as they were drawn from a barrel. The first recorded mention of Le Lotto in France comes from a 1778 novel by Voltaire called “Candide.” In the book, one of the characters is described as playing “a very serious game of lotto.”

The game made its way to the United States in 1929, when a New York man named Edwin S. Lowe was introduced to it at a carnival in Atlanta. Lowe renamed the game “bingo” after hearing someone accidentally shout out the word “bingo” instead of “beano,” which is what the game was called at the time.

Lowe began mass-producing bingo cards and selling them to churches and charities, who would use them as fundraisers. The popularity of bingo exploded in the 1930s, and by 1934 there were more than 12,000 games being played every week in New York City alone.

Bingo arrived in Las Vegas in 1948, when mobster Bugsy Siegel opened the city’s first casino, the Flamingo. Siegel was looking for a way to attract more families to his casino, and he saw bingo as the perfect solution. The game took off in Vegas and is now one of the most popular attractions at casinos across the city.

Now that we’ve taken a look at the history of bingo, let’s move on to consider the current situation of bingo in Las Vegas today.
