On Saturday, Aug. 6, the City of North Las Vegas celebrated the start of the upcoming school year with a pool party at Silver Mesa Recreation Center, hosted by Councilman Scott Black and Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick.
In addition to free admission to the Silver Mesa pool, attendees were treated to free food, music, snow cones and more. The City also donated a total of 450 backpacks to students preparing to go back to school.
“Bringing together the community at a place like Silver Mesa Recreation Center is incredibly important to me,” Councilman Scott Black said. “We provide a fun and safe environment for community members of all ages, and today we were grateful to celebrate the new school year for our City of North Las Vegas students, encouraging and setting up our students to succeed all year long.”
Councilman Black and Commissioner Kirkpatrick have hosted this Pool Splash event every year for the past 4 years to help ensure North Las Vegas students are equipped and ready to succeed at the beginning of the school year. In addition to backpacks, a variety of toys and games were handed out, and 10 children were selected to receive new BMX bicycles!
“It’s always fun to see the community come together for one last party before our youngest citizens go back to school,” said Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick. “I’m proud to see everyone out here not only for the pool party, but also to ensure that our students have supplies to succeed this school year.”
The event is part of the City’s larger efforts to boost student achievement citywide and provide every child with access to high-quality educational options through its LearnNLV initiative, which includes partnering with public schools to provide the support they need, increasing quality education options in the City through targeted recruitment and talent support, and expanding access and connection to school services and options.
The Pool Splash was made possible in part by the generous support of the Southern Nevada Health District, Las Vegas Paving, Vault Bike Shop and Clark County Safe Kids.
