The Mob Museum Announces April Programs, Promotions

The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its roster of public programs for April.

Scarface Behind the Camera: An Exclusive Look at Al Capone’s Home Movie
Date: Thursday, April 7
Time: 7 to 8 p.m.
Location: Inside the historic courtroom on the second floor. To RSVP to attend in-person, click here.
Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum admission.
Description: In 1929, Al Capone made a 13-minute home movie, capturing life in and around his Miami Beach mansion. Capone’s family kept the original film reel under wraps for more than 90 years. The Mob Museum, which recently acquired the footage, will show excerpts to the public for the first time, including glimpses of two infamous houseguests, Lucky Luciano and Frank Costello. Diane Capone, granddaughter of the Chicago Mob boss, will appear live via teleconference to discuss the home movie and Capone’s life in Florida.
Speakers: Geoff Schumacher, the Museum’s vice president of exhibits and programs, will show excerpts from the film and discuss the historical context in which it was made. Diane Capone, granddaughter of the Chicago Mob boss, will appear live via teleconference.

The Mob Museum presents a three-part series: Breaking the Cycle of Incarceration. The first event in this series follows:

Prison Reform in Nevada: The Challenges of Mass Incarceration
Date: Wednesday, April 20
Time: 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Location: Inside the historic courtroom on the second floor. A livestream of the presentation will be available on the Museum’s website. To RSVP to attend in-person or for the livestream link, click here.
Cost: Free for attendees.
Description: The United States has the world’s highest incarceration rate and Nevada’s prison population has skyrocketed over the past decade, reflecting similar trends across the country. In the first public forum of this three-part series, state officials and community leaders will provide a high-level overview of the biggest challenges facing Nevada’s correctional institutions.
Speakers:

  • Charles Daniels, director of the Nevada Department of Corrections
  • Frank Rudy Cooper, William S. Boyd professor of law and director of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, program on race, gender and policing
  • Athar Haseebullah, executive director for the American Civil Liberties Union in Nevada
  • Sheri Sneen, deputy chief of the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation, Southern Command.
  • Shakala Alvaranga, director of public programs for The Mob Museum, will be the moderator.

A Gangster’s Paradise: The Mob in Saratoga Springs, a Book Signing with Greg Veitch
Date: Saturday, April 23
Time: 1 to 5 p.m.
Location: On the first floor of the Museum. In the Museum’s Rise of the Cartels exhibit.
Cost: Free for attendees.
Description: In the first half of the 20th century, Saratoga Springs, New York, was a virtual “Gangster’s Paradise,” with gunmen and gamblers having the run of the town. With public officials accepting graft on a grand scale and police looking the other way, a who’s who of organized crime made Saratoga Springs their playground. Greg Veitch, retired police chief of Saratoga Springs, will sign copies of his book for interested attendees.

Community Safety Day: Free Family Event with Live Demonstrations and Special Activities – Traffic Safety
Date: Sunday, April 24
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Location: In the brand-new outdoor event plaza located in The Mob Museum’s east lot. To RSVP to attend in-person, click here.
Cost: Free for attendees.
Description: In partnership with the Road Equity Alliance Project and other community partners, The Mob Museum will host a community safety day to raise awareness of traffic safety. Attendees can partake in several educational, interactive experiences and demonstrations by road safety organizations and first responders. These experiences include an alcohol-impairment-simulation goggles tricycle challenge, distracted driving simulator, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue truck walk-through, Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada safety presentation and more. This family-friendly event will also include informational booths, giveaways for guests and a food truck.

Odessa’s Reign: The Queen of Washington, D.C.’s Underworld

Date: Thursday, April 28

Time: 7 to 8 p.m. 

Location: In the historic courtroom on the second floor. To RSVP, click here.

Cost: Free for Museum Members or with Museum admission.

Description: Odessa Madre built an empire in the 1930s selling liquor by the shot as well as managing multiple brothels and a lucrative bookkeeping gambling operation. She became one of the most powerful women in Washington, D.C.’s history, all while keeping the police in her back pocket. Filmmaker Robin Hamilton brings to life the fascinating story of a woman who challenged the idea of what a gangster looked and sounded like.

  • Filmmaker Robin Hamilton: Hamilton is an Emmy-award winning television host and producer.
