Student speaker series kicks off at BLACK FIRE INNOVATION
The Las Vegas Techies plan to host a mentorship event in October to focus on career opportunities in the field of technology for female students by introducing them to women already working in the industry.
The student speaker series Techie Talks, kicks off at 12:30 p.m. on October 2, 2021 at BLACK FIRE INNOVATION, 8400 W Sunset Road, Suite 400 in Las Vegas.
The event offers female 6th through 12th grade students interested in an information technology (IT) career with the opportunity to speak one-on-one with women professionals in the field.
These specially selected mentors are 12 professional women in a variety of tech roles, including a VP of IT Risk Management, a Chief Health Informatics Officer and a Cloud Security Specialist. The event will also include fun swag and the opportunity to win a Microsoft Surface Tablet.
The event will be promoted to Clark County School District students via the district’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) program. This is the first time Las Vegas Techies has hosted the event.
“You may love the idea of technology, but you may not know how you would fit in or all the options that are available,” said Heather Parks, Healliam Founder & CEO. “The world of IT has a variety of roles that suit many personalities and disciplines. Speaking to different women who are in those roles can turn a light bulb on for someone who doesn’t want to be an engineer or programmer but does like talking to people and gathering business requirements like a business analyst.”
Admission is free, but due to COVID restrictions will be limited to the first 50 female students. First-come, first-served registration is available at lvtechieawards.com .
“It comes down to – if they see it, they will be it. The Student Series Techie Talks event is a chance for girls to meet a diverse group of women and learn about all the different education and career paths available, which lead to amazing opportunities in technology,” said Sonia Petkewich, tech recruiter and CEO of Taurean Consulting Group of Las Vegas.
