FORM GUIDE (all competitions, most recent first): Lights FC: DLDDL, Miami: LLLLL
PREVIOUS MEETING: Miami defeated Las Vegas 4-1 on April 23, 2023, at FIU Football Stadium in Miami. Christian Sorto, Paco Craig, Claudio Repetto and Joaquín Rivas scored for the hosts, while Lucas Stauffer scored for the Lights.
INTERNATIONAL DUTY: The Lights will be without goalkeeper Raiko Arozarena and midfielder Edison Azcona on Saturday, as each is away with Cuba and the Dominican Republic, respectively, for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Lights defender Shawn Smart earned a spot on the Week 13 USL Championship Team of the Week bench following Las Vegas’s scoreless draw against Phoenix Rising. In addition to helping keep a clean sheet, he was lively all evening in attack and very nearly bagged a match-winner when his shot was saved off the goal line.
HOMESTAND: Saturday kicks off a crucial set of four home games in five matches through the month of June, with each opponent sitting either below or right around the playoff line.
TOUGH SLEDDING: Miami enters this weekend last in the USL Championship overall table with just seven points from 13 contests. After an opening weekend win over the Colorado Switchbacks, Miami has just one win since March 16 and has lost nine of its last 10, including five in a row.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Allen Gavilanes, Winger
Gavilanes leads Miami in scoring with four goals on the season, two more than anyone else on his team. The winger is in his first year with Miami after spending the previous three seasons in USL League One with Greenville Triumph.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
Las Vegas Lights Head Coach Dennis Sanchez
On building on the second-half performance last week against Phoenix…
As a coach, I always go back to the ‘why’ behind our success. If you look at the last four or five games, we talk a lot about our foundation. It means being defensively sound and disciplined, making sure we’re organized and not working in isolation…We’re creating a lot of good opportunities, and I think you saw a lot of that in second half against Phoenix where we arrive relatively consistently in our attacking half…We’re due for a game where we explode for goals, and hopefully these goals start coming in more consistently.
Las Vegas Lights FC midfielder Coleman Gannon
On the match against Miami FC this weekend…
They’re not as high in the table as some teams, but we know that they’re a good team and have gotten unlucky on a few results. We’re not taking them lightly.
Las Vegas Lights FC defender Joe Hafferty
On the importance of four of the next five matches at home…
Momentum is everything. It’s always more difficult to go on the road and get a win. When you have teams come in, they travel, they’re staying in a hotel, they’re knocked off their rhythm, you’ve got to take advantage of it. With this stretch of home games, we must take advantage of it.
