Super Bowl Champion Helps Open New Cox Innovation Lab at Andre Agassi Boys & Girls Club in West Las Vegas
Super Bowl champion Malcolm Mitchell helped celebrate the opening of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada’s 13th Cox Innovation Lab inside the Andre Agassi Clubhouse, 800 N. Martin Luther King Blvd., on Wednesday, July 26.
Mitchell, an advocate of Cox’s Connect2Compete program, author and founder/CEO of Share The Magic Foundation, was joined by Club members along with Cox Market Vice President Janet Uthman, Nevada State Senator Dina Neal, Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy, Cox Business Vice President Steve Westerman, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada Chief Administrative Officer Jaime Weller-Lafavor and Cox Director of Field Operations and Boys & Girls Club Board Member Joe Peeples.
The new, technology-filled Cox Innovation Lab at the Agassi Club is made possible thanks to a $20,000 grant from the James M. Cox Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Cox Enterprises, which includes Cox Las Vegas.
It is part of a greater gift from the Foundation to create and expand Cox Innovation Labs across the nation, develop STEM programming and provide training for Boys & Girls Club staff.
“It’s important for today’s kids to have a place to access the internet and increase their digital literacy,” said Mitchell. “It’s my hope that more young students find joy and passion in reading and learning like I did, through access to technology and the tools Cox provides.”
According to Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada President and CEO Andy Bischel, the Cox Innovation Labs are the cornerstone of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Club Tech program, which provides students access to curriculum to help advance computer literacy skills and help bridge the digital divide for children without access to a computer or internet connection at home.
“We’re committed to ensuring our children have internet access and the tools needed to succeed at school, home and now, thanks to the generosity of the James M. Cox Foundation, right here at the Agassi Club, which is an important part of our West Las Vegas community,” said Cox Market Vice President Janet Uthman.
