Father’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. Some countries have developed their own national traditions, but most countries follow the U.S. example and treat fathers and grandfathers to Father’s Day gifts and greeting cards.
The History of Father’s Day
The tradition of celebrating fathers on a specific day dates back to the early 1900s. The inaugural Father’s Day was observed in the United States, where Sonora Smart Dodd, as a daughter, conceived the concept of a parallel celebration honouring fathers in the same manner as Mother’s Day. Dodd’s father, William Jackson Smart, raised his six children alone after their mother’s death, and Dodd recognized the sacrifices and commitment of a father.
Following initial attempts, Father’s Day was officially established in the United States in 1972, when President Richard Nixon signed a law officially recognizing the holiday. Since that time, Father’s Day has been observed in numerous countries around the globe, although on varying dates.
The date of Father’s Day varies across countries, with the third Sunday of June being the most common. This year, the date of Father’s Day will be June 18.
Fatherhood encompasses a multitude of roles and responsibilities at ViggoSlots. Fathers are responsible for ensuring the financial stability of their families. However, in many instances, this responsibility has been shared more equally between mothers and fathers. In families where both parents treat each other as equal partners, it is less problematic for the roles to be reversed in certain areas.
Is Father’s Day Celebrated Around Europe?
Father’s Day is widely celebrated throughout Europe, and in fact, the first celebration of fatherhood began in Roman Catholic Europe in the 1500s. To this day, many European Catholic countries, such as Spain, Italy, and Portugal, celebrate Father’s Day on March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph in the Catholic calendar. Saint Joseph was the husband of the Virgin Mary and the foster father of Jesus Christ, and is therefore considered the patron saint of fathers.
Many European countries, including the United Kingdom, celebrate Father’s Day on the same day as the United States, but the dates vary throughout Europe. In many Scandinavian countries, such as Sweden, Finland, and Norway, it is celebrated on the second Sunday in November in an attempt to boost the economy during the otherwise slow shopping month. In Germany, Father’s Day is associated with Ascension Day, which is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter.
Which Countries Do not Celebrate Father’s Day in June?
Some countries in the Southern Hemisphere, such as Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji, celebrate Father’s Day on the first Sunday in September. This is believed to be to keep an even distance from Mother’s Day celebrations in May, and because Australia and neighbouring countries already have a number of other national holidays in the first half of the year.
Some other countries have their own traditions; in Bulgaria, for example, Father’s Day is celebrated on December 26 because in the Bulgarian Orthodox Church December 26 is also the day of St. Joseph, the patron saint of fathers. Taiwan celebrates Father’s Day on August 8th. This is because the pronunciation of the number eight in Mandarin Chinese is bā, which is very similar to the word father: bà. So the eighth day of the eighth month (August 8th) is pronounced bā-bā, a play on daddy or papa!
The popularity of the holiday is indicated by the fact that almost every continent takes the opportunity to celebrate fathers, some countries as examples: Argentina, Bahamas, Belarus, Bolivia, Chile, China, Japan, Egypt, Iran, Nigeria, Mozambique.
