Thursday morning, Aug. 26, 2021, about 9 a.m. the newly constructed traffic signal at the intersection of Grand Teton Drive and Grand Canyon Drive will be placed into all-way red flash operation in preparation for full green/yellow/red operation Monday morning Aug. 30. City of Las Vegas Department of Public Works Transportation Engineering staff will be on site both days to activate and monitor the traffic signal. Increasing traffic and development in the northwest area of the city required the conversion of this intersection from all-way stop signs to a traffic signal.
As part of the city’s fiscal year 2018-2019 Traffic Signal and ITS Project (Package A), there are a total of seven intersections being converted from all-way stop control to traffic signal control, plus the installation of one pedestrian flasher. Three intersections included in this project were previously completed and activated, including at Oso Blanca Road / Farm Road, Oso Blanca / Grand Montecito Parkway and Grand Teton / Hualapai Way / Skye Village. The intersection of Grand Teton and Grand Canyon is the fourth to be completed as part of this project.
In the coming weeks, the following intersections will be upgraded as they are completed:
- Centennial Parkway / Fort Apache Road,
- Deer Springs Way / Grand Canyon Drive, and
- Farm Road / Grand Canyon Drive.
The pedestrian flasher at the mid-block crossing on Oso Blanca Road between Durango and Farm was activated in May 2021. In addition to the traffic signal construction at these intersections, the city of Las Vegas is also adding associated Intelligent Transportation System-related improvements, including fiber-optic cable and closed-circuit television cameras to enable the signals to communicate with the regional traffic management center and improve remote monitoring of the traffic signal operations.
Total construction cost for this project is $3.7 million, funded through Regional Transportation Commission Fuel Revenue Indexing tax and city of Las Vegas Traffic Signal Impact Fees. Construction on the entire project is expected to be completed by the end of September 2021.
